Topic 2: Filmmaking checklist

This is a practical guide to filmmaking and video short film production.

All the stages of production is outlined below so you as media student, can "make it happen".
This page can be used as a resource - it has a check list for each stage of production and production documents you can download and print to use.

STAGE 1: Development: Idea, Pitch, Story

1. Idea – format, length, story:
Here are our quick tips for brainstorming short film ideas:
  • Determine how long your short film will be.
  • Think small.
  • Start with a location.
  • Think about your experiences.
  • Look in the news.
  • Base your story on a character.
  • Get feedback.
  • Think about your theme.

 2. Pitch to ‘sell your idea’. How to get people involved.

To Pitch you need to be prepared, know your audience, understand your characters journey and can describe your films narrative arc.
Also good to have visual mood board or concept board.

Brainstorming ideas: and how to sell idea for a film. Turning concept or idea into story for film
ACTIVITY:
Write a story from a real life inspired experience. Story from holiday? And create setting, characters, and plot structure? Use for film concept later.

STAGE 2: Pre-production

Prep-production checklist
  1. Synopsis
  2. Budget, if any (special requirements)
  3. Script and treatment
  4. Storyboards
  5. Design style (set, costumes)
  6. Locations – exterior or interior
  7. Script breakdown
  8. Equipment needed: for camera dept
  9. Crew and cast
  10. Release forms
  11. Production schedules
  12. Safety reports – filming in public, on the roads. Anything dangerous in the script? Note: Always ask you teacher first!
  13. Casting process and rehearsals.
  14. Who is your Audience.​​
